Android Fashion/ A Cut Above

Vladimir Paripovic is a Belgrade architect and created these paper inspired fashion pieces for window installations at Belgrade Design Week 2011 / 100% FUTURE SERBIA . Utilizing paper and transparent textile his android outfits are both futuristic and avaunt guard. You can see more of his work here.

"BDW's 100% FUTURE SERBIA segment will be devoted to the promotion of young and talented designers, whose works will be presented in shop windows all over the city center. The main idea is to transfer classical museum exhibitions to the streets of the city and to present them to a wider general audience, not only to those who regularly visit galleries and exhibitions. The exhibition will show 50 authors who will present their works as livesize objects and models.

The Silent Evolution

Jason deCares Taylor's, The Silent Evolution will put a smile on your face and blow you away! This underwater installation consist of 400 life-size figures at a depth of 9m below sea level and is located off the coast of Cancun and the Isla Mujeres in Mexico. The sculptures are beautiful images of everyday people who's eyes are closed. It gives me a peaceful feeling and makes me think that they are in a dreamworld. The materials used to make the sculptures will draw sea creatures towards it and eventually form a coral reef. Wow!

The Art of Discarded Lottery Tickets

Lauren Was and Adam Eckstrom are the artist duo of Ghost of Dream. They've taken thousands of discarded lottery tickets and lost hopes and turned them into amazing sculptures.

"We started to collect tons and tons and talk about what people dream about when they play the lottery. Then we did some serious research to find out what people buy when they do win the lottery.  Through our research we found that most people, after they win the lottery, the first thing they do is buy a car."

The artists specifically matched the price of the total lottery tickets used to the actual dollar value of each item (i.e. $39,000 of lottery tickets for the Hummer “Dream Car”).

Book installation

The book tunnel is an installation called Scanner, by Slovakian artist Matej Krén, intended to fill its audience with awe and confusion. The awe-factor is apparent, and once inside the structure, the confusion is heightened by mirrors which multiply the already-dizzying number of volumes.

Knitting Nancy by Superblue

Following theme, “The Welcoming City”, for the London Festival of Architecture, Superblue created a large scaled architectural seating unit that was inspired by the traditional Knitting Nancy. This scaled-up version weaves through Jubilee Park and was designed so that visitors can participate in the knitting and the making of the installation. It's awesome!

Obsessive Consumption

Went to the opening reception for Kate Bingaman-Burt this weekend that promoted her new book "Obsessive Consumption: What did you buy today?"

Obsessive Consumption represents a selection of four years of raw and simple ink drawings whipped together with tons of humor. The exhibit featured almost a thousand drawings of purchased goods along with illustrations of mixtapes, receipts, credit card statements, shoplifted items, internet passwords and security envelope patterns.

I loved how she pulled the space together showcasing her work. Multi-colored walls of salmon and lime, zines hanging from the celiing at various lengths (which you could purchase)  a wall made from balloons and original drawings to purchase, organzed by month and year. One of my favorite pieces was the internet passwords poster. So very funny and who knew that so many of us have filth on our minds!

Sruli Recht- Made to measure

Oh the work of Sruli is absolutely stunning! I love that he says he likes to make ugly things look beautiful and that he uses poetry to describe the work he does. From product design, to installations to jewelry you'll find his style raw, organic and compelling.

Heavy Metal never looked so pretty.

The metal craft sculptures of artist Cal Lane are just stunning. Yielding a welding torch she creates signature designs of lace doilies and baroque patterns into such mundane objects as shovels, dumpsters and old oil drums.

They're just beautiful.

I also like her dirt floor installation work.

Content 9

Went to a sweet show last night in downtown Portland. Content 09 was a fashion tour of 38 of Portland's finest independent fashion and accessory designers. They took over 28 rooms on the second floor of the Ace Hotel, a swank hotel combining street culture and style.

Like artist showing in a gallery, each designer was tasked with creating installations within their room that painted a picture of their brand. Some of the artist really out did themselves. There were rooms staged with what looked like a night gone wrong, era 1920. Some where you felt you were outside wandering in a forest, and even a room with a bathtub filled with buttons and fish.

Some of my favorite designers showcasing were Emily Katz, Moonwoods (cool wooden jewelry and glasses), Sword+Fern (loved her jewlery), Heather Treadway (I loved her cloaks).

Yellena James Aquarium Exhibit

Yellena James intricate and organic pen & ink drawings are currently on display at the Grassy Knoll Gallery with original art and prints available through the online store.

The centerpiece of the exhibit is the Aquarium Multitouch App which allows gallery-goers to spawn new creatures that move around with limited intelligence, bring her artwork to life. The table and app were built from scratch at Fashionbuddha Studio with sounds designed by Radium Audio. Here's some more info about the exhibit and table. DIY Multitouch Table

In development, Aquarium is part generative art experiment, part biology lab. Through gestures, unique creatures are brought to life - each with DNA and varying degrees of intelligence that allows it to grow, breed, and even devour smaller creatures.

Robert Bradford grew up in a fairly bland South London suburb and wanted to become an artist from a very young age.

In 2004 Robert began experimenting with a series of sculptures which utilise plastic toys as their main modelling material, and which have now attracted consistent international attention. After trials with two unsatisfactory construction methods, he began screwing the toys into wooden armatures, which proved both strong and highly adaptable as a method,

Works from this series have been showing in London Bristol and New York, can be seen in Paris Amsterdam London Flanders and Bangkok over the next months.
